A scoter rests on the sand of Ocean Beach, San Francisco. Its feathers are dark so it's hard to tell, but I think it was affected by oil from the Nov. 7, 2007 spill in San Francisco Bay. This is really unusual behavior for these birds, which I've observed over many years of fishing this and nearby beaches. They dive for molluscs, and where you find scoters you often can catch surfperch nearby. I've seldom seen a scoter on the shore, and never on a sandy beach or near people and dogs.
