Summary clips from the 2011 Institute for Affordable Transportation 11th Annual Student Design Competition (www.drivebuv.org). Purdue University wone the Innovation Award by designing a low cost simple transmission using only simple belts, pulleys, chains, and sprockets; all components that can be found in developing countries. The vehicle was very light (less than 1000lbs) and performed very well. Students from the team travel to Cameroon, Africa to build the vehicle for the African Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies (www.acrest.org).
