So if you buy a 3-D printer can you then make more 3-D printers with your 3-D printer?

We still need to buy "ink" though, bottom line is will it be cheaper to do it yourself or buy the part, i mean most have ink or laser printers but cost keeps us from printing our own books, same goes for the good old film development service you could do it in your home but you needed the equipment and a constant supply of development fluids etc,, maybe in the end it will be cheaper have it printed at Kinko's?

Adapt or die. The only people who will go out of business are the ones incapable of planning.

If 3D printers are going to take the manufacturing out, then the manufacturers could start supplying printing supplies and providing expert maintenance and repairs to them. It's also still going to be cheaper and faster to mass manufacture some popular components and machines. Heck, you could manufacture standard components and consumers could mix those with their own custom hardware for cheaper builds

We just need affordable equipment to make electronic chips and things will get ridiculous. I'm interested to see how industry will cope with the changes on demand. Will they bitch about it like the music industry does about copied music or will they actually adapt their business models to the current climate. Looks like open source might even expand out of the software industry. This pleases me greatly.

this technology is open sourced, which means it cant be stopped, but as and9744 said, companies would be able to sell a design for something, and you would be able to customise it, and print it off at home, which would negate the need for production and distribution, if anything it would help businesses, as they would still be able to sell something for the same price it has always been, while not having to pay for absolutely zero production cost, and no distribution costs
