Vesselina Kasarova (mezzo-soprano) sings Ruggiero's bravura aria, Sta nell' ircana, from Handel's opera, Alcina. Marc Minkowski conducts Les Musiciens du Louvre. Musikfest Bremen in September 2006.

If this lights your fire, looks for the Studio Farao CD set of 'Alcina' from the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (2005).

  • best version of this aria and superior to Jaroussky's. The tempo is great and more in tune to barroque/castrato singing. VK's voice is strong , agile.

  • I love it, too, hngltn, though I'd say it is different from Jaroussky's version rather than superior. :o)

Kasarova takes a lot of bashing for her 'unstylistic' singing of these baroque numbers, but I love how alive she makes Ruggiero sounds. Variety is the spice of life, ay? (don't remember who said it first, but I agree with the sentiment) :o)

  • somehow the faster tempo sounds better to me. it displays better technique and ability. looks like she made Sta Nell'Ircana her signature aria.

  • It does to me, too. :o) I bet those audience of the baroque era were as fond of having fun and rousing singing as we do today.

I hope the Agrippina running at Opernhaus Zurich is being taped. The reviews are making me seriously jealous of those who are attending the shows. I'm living on the wrong continent! :o)

  • Listen to Vivica Genaux' version - much more beautiful and exciting. Better orchestra, nicer voice, more pleasure and emotions while listening. Try it, it's worth while !

  • By far the fastest, but certainly the most exciting and bloodcurdling interpretation of this bravura aria. You get the impression that they really enjoy it, and the fearsome tempo doesn't hold Vesselina back to sing the coloraturas so full of spirit, energy and emotion like it is her hallmark. Great!

  • @hngltn Disagree; this is a very contemporary interpretation.

  • VK has done it again!
