Many years ago, on November 3, 1976, my 25th birthday, my good friend Alfred Lagarde, Hollands Nr 1 DJ of all times, invited me to a private party in the Amsterdam Hilton. To my surprise it was a party that not only included Herman Brood, a friend I knew from the Dutch blues band Cuby and the Blizzards, who were my mates in The Clown, a pub in Groningen, but also Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards, who I met 4 years before in Villa Nellcote in Villefranche, near Nice, where I lived with my girlfriend, a Dutch baroness, and where they recorded their Rolling Stones Album Exile On Main Str.
To my surprise Keith sang a song for us, Cathy's Clown, which Alfred recorded for me. On July 11, 2001, almost 10 years ago, Herman took his life in the same place, by jumping from the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton.
Herman, this one's for you, Never seen, he was never heard, passing by like a sleepin'bird.

  • Hi Elvis, that's what singers do, they sing their songs, and not only once. I was there when Keith sang it, for me and about 100 others. The next day a mate of mine who was a DJ gave the tape to me.

  • This is "So Sad," not Cathy's Clown.

  • @MrJourard: If you listen to the whole sound track you will discover that Keith is singing Cathy's clown.

  • Thanx mate!

  • @tmartin525 This is my favorite era of music and what I'd like to learn how to play,. Would you be willing to share? Thanks

  • Richards aged big time

  • Who the hell posted this awful picture? It's simply awful!!!!!! LOL

  • I'm reading in various places that these songs were recorded in Mexico when Mr. K was getting married in 1983. That's around the time I was given this cassette with all those songs on it. I was in San Fran at the time, so right time, right coast....

    That's probably the source.

  • @ElvisClambake well looky hear, ifn thas an assocsheate who tol yall not ta copy or lent it ta no one, ther aint no sinse in lissenin to what theys talkin bout caus they ownly lookin out fer theys own innarests. now ifn thas a frien who tol yall not to copy or lent to nobody, well i rekkon a differnt lite gits shined on a matter. but them associates caint be trusted ta be lookin out fer yalls innarest caus theys jus lookin out fer theyselfs. yep, it whut my granpappy alway tol me an he dint lie.

    ....

  • Great recording. Terrible pic. Makes Keith look creepy doll. I am sure you coulda got a better one.

  • This recording is absolutely brilliant, pure gold. Very rare indeed!

  • One of my favorite Everly Bros songs. I always hooped to come across a version of Keith doing it. thanks for posting.

  • @ElvisClambake I have three bootleg disc of Keith singing this and a ton of other songs from that era as well as a lot of him doing Stones classics with just him an an acoustic guitar.

I don't understand why your friend told you not to share. As long as it isn't commercially avaiable it is legal to have bootleg copies

  • Bloody amazing - heart and soul of the you-know-what. I was like, where the hell is "Cathy's Clown"? and he finally sang the old Everly Brothers' tune. I grew upon the same amazing stuff.

  • this should be released on a cd! i want it!

  • That is quite a creepy picture. But a good story, though.

  • An associate of mine gave me a cassette of Keith Richards singing Buddy Holly and Everly Brothers songs, some of it with sax.

This was in San Francisco in 1985-ish.

He told me not to copy it or lend it to anyone.

    I still have it.

So, it's at least pre-1985 and who ever you claim he sang this song for, he sang alot more of them and someone recorded it, obviously.

Ever since the internet, I've been waiting to see who else had this and where it came from.

  • 00:00 So sad to watch good love go bad

    2:36 Cathy's Clown

  • @wato115 Yep.

  • @MrJourard this is so sad at the start and then becomes cathy's clown

  • creepy pic nice

  • the story's too good to be true, but if it is...salute to ya!!
