Embakasi is the largest constituency in Nairobi. It borders the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Which is the largest airport in the country. Despite it's locality, the constituency is steeped in poor drainage systems, poor infrastructure , lack of clean water and lack of sufficient health facilities. Most of the systems were put in during the pre colonial times to serve few airport staff.
This program ran under my weekly segment on K24 television called Nairobi Matters.
Background of Nairobi Matters: Nairobi, the City in the Sun has experienced phenomenal growth over the last four decades. Overwhelmed by a rapidly growing population (8% annual growth), a housing shortage (60% of the citys population live in slum dwellings), crumbling infrastructure, and inadequate service provision by the Nairobi City Council, Nairobi is set to go the way of other unplanned cities, e.g. Lagos, unless problems affecting the city are addressed now.
Is the newly established Ministry Nairobi Metropolitan Development (headed by Njeru Gitahe) the Nairobi City Council, and the government at large ready to cope with the demand of a growing city?
Also:
• Does the Minister have a grand revival plan for Nairobi?
• What happened to the World Bank funded The Nairobi We Want initiative spear-headed by Mayor Magic Mwangi in the 1990s?
• What are the issues facing those who live and work in Nairobi, and what are the priorities they want to see addressed by the new Minister?
Execution:Nairobi Matters is a weekly interactive program that explores the many communities that comprise Nairobi and its environs in three episodes or screenings. The programme not only celebrates the good in the various neighborhoods, but also seeks to understand those difficult issues many Nairobians face.
In the first two screenings, vignettes of the various communities are shown, raising concerns or affirming Nairobi life. Each of these short weekday episodes draws questions from citizens and promote the weekend programme.
At the end of each week, the Minister, Parliamentary and Nairobi authorities are able to not only respond to residents issues and audience questions via SMS, but to also reveal new visions and initiatives that would enhance the lives of Kenyas capital residents.
This show won the 2009 CNN/MULTI CHOICE AFRICAN AWARDS IN THE ENVIRONMENT CATEGORY
Good work. The gov def needs to spend more money in these areas of need rather than the millions spent on new offices for the pm & president etc.
