This brief choral paean from Sophocles' Trachiniae (Women of Trachis), translated by Keyne Cheshire, celebrates good news. Deanna Kilman (Deianira in the original Greek) has just learned that her husband Hercules (Heracles) is returning safe from war. The deities praised are Apollo, Artemis and her Nymphs, and finally Bacchus (Dionysus), whose influence ultimately appears to take over.
