obviesly u have never read the book, or watched the movei closely, if they wanted to grab Aidads 2 top advisers they had to do it in the middle of the afternoon, there was a meeating, they grabed both of them from the meeting, there was o way the mission would have been a sucses if it would have been at night, Gen Garrison quotes in the movei " i dont pick the time or place of there meatings"

@GHOSTD102 Well I will agree that it would be HARD to shoot down an AC-130U but not impossible. I forgot to mention in H. Wasdin's book he states multiple types of AA guns. Somalia once had the largest soviet force in africa in the 60s and has plenty of surplus AA guns. You may (or may not) be familiar with, The shVAK cannon, Type 99,105mmR, DShK, Bofors 40mm, Flak 88s, 57mm AZP S-60 etc etc. All of which can shoot down an AC-130. I would not want to take that chance with a $190 million plane.

@Ghillie334 First off given the range of an M2 or DSKA the AC-130 would be in little danger from ground fire because even if a stinger was fired the wall of flairs would prevent it from hitting as has been the case in Afghanistan for the past 10 years. Second, YES the 160th SOAR operates MH-60L Black Hawks NOT MH-60G Pave Hawk which are ONLY operated by the Air Force. I’ve read various books about the battle as well as currently being in the Army and just being over all an intelligent person.

@GHOSTD102 Ok don't try to be an ass, 1. I don't play "cod" or video games. second you are wrong the somalies has DSKAs which can easily shoot down an AC-130 with a few luck hits. RPGs were rigged to be airbursts which explode in the air at a pre-set altitude. Somalies had M2 brownings as well as anti aircraft wepons and reported stinger missles. Are you serious! The 160th DOES run MH-60s! All you know is from the movie. Read Howard Wasdins book and M. Durant then pretend to know somthing.

@Ghillie334 Unlike in COD in real life you can NOT shoot down an AC-130 with an anti tank weapon like an AT-4 or RPG-7 so the gun ship would have been in NO danger. Also, 160th SOAR-A is an Army unit and so does not opperate any MH-60s as they are only used by the Air Force. As for civilian chasulties as Somolia is a failed state and has no government there they are ALL civilians and if you know anything about the battle you would know that most of the city was attacking the crash sites.

@portsmouth2009 only 1 problem with your theory... Bradleys woudnt stand a chance with all those RPG's

and the AC130 would have killed civilians as well as their enemy... soldiers are unortharised to kill civilians unless its last resort. so good thinking but the general was right not to.
