Made by Group 4 for Mechatronics, Spring 2009 term.
Sprinkler designed to avoid objects in front of it. We designed 3 menu modes, Auto, manual and shut down.
In Auto- sprinkler can avoid objects by reducing the flow rate of the water. It can water based on time and moisture of the soil and designed to water if the light and temperature readings are proper.
Manual- User can read all the sensors and control the valve
Shut down- closes the valve completely, and then user can turn off power safely.
Features:
Avoidance- it uses two sonar sensor and looks left and right of the water stream for objects, if there are objects, it would reduce the flow with the respect to distance, so its never an on/off situation.
Self calibration- it can self calibrate the flow rate so that line preasure diferences would not effect it.
Watering- it would water as long as temperature and light are proper also as long as soil not too wet and no more that 10 min. It checks for watering every 2 hrs
Sensors:
Soil moisture- home made sensor, information can be found here http://www.cheapvegetablegardener.com/2009/03/how-to-make-cheap-soil-moisture...
(smaller the sensor the faster response)
Temperature- DS1620 from Parallax
Light- Photo resistor
Pressure- Oil Pressure sending unit, (similar http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=VDO-360086...)
Range sensors- PING from Paralax, 3.2meters max, max range set to 2.8meters radius to ensure smooth operation.
Timing- 555 timer set to 0.5Hz
Actuators:
Globe motor 12V 21A stall, 117:1 gearing
1/2" gate valve, to get the precision
coupled through 10mm socket
4 buttons for menu
2x16 LCD

We used BS2 from Parallax, as it was required by the project guide lines.
