what size was his viola? mine is just 16, and my teach's is like 17.5 but this is waay bigger!

It's a Amati 18" from the Royal Academy of Music's collection. He's a professor there and they lent it to him to play in the LSO.

That's truer than you may know. "Mandolin" means "little Mandola," so I imagine "violin" does in fact mean "little viola."
