Green Interior Design for Convio by OTJ Architects

OTJ's green design experts ensured 64% of the building materials were recycled while demolishing the existing interior of the 14,000 sq. foot space down to the concrete slabs and columns.

Key design elements of Convio's offices on the west end of downtown Washington, DC include:

- access to natural light
- use of local building materials
- all furniture was "cradle-to-cradle certified"
- no VOCs were introduced through paint or adhesives

The clean, sophisticated & fun design created collaboration, while meeting complex spatial requirements.

Speaker: This is a project called Convio that I recently finished for my company. I took the project from concept to completion serving as the designer as well as the overall project manager.

From the beginning, Convio was committed to the well being of the environment as well as to providing a healthy and productive workplace for their occupants. We demolished the entire 14,000 square feet of space so that we could start over and make it what they wanted. During demolition, we were able recycle 64% of our waste. Key Design Elements included the access to natural light and the use of local building materials wherever possible. We ensured that all furniture was cradle-to-cradle certified and that no VOCs were introduced into the space through paint or adhesives.

The goal of the design was for clients to walk again and feel like they were stepping into Convio's website. Clean, sophisticated, and fun. Convio's tagline is "Move people." So we focused on this concept from the beginning. The design sought to inspire motivation and mobilization by creating a collaborative environment and encourages the transformation of ideas into actions. The new space is a reflection of Convio's commitment to their clients and willingness to bring people together to develop thoughtful methods for success. The space has become a destination for both the company and visitors alike to gather, collaborate and learn from each other.

The company and their customers also benefited greatly from Convio's strong financial position and their ability to invest in this expansion during the current economic situation. We have a state of the art green facility for pennies on the dollar.
