This is a video showing the engine reving - to give an example of how the engine sounds and looked during troubled times.
At this point we decided to try to hobble into Mercedes-Benz dealership on Ogilvy Road in Ottawa - they were willing to take us in and look at the car on Monday, 14th February.
NB: As of February 14th - mechanic isn't sure why car isn't working (apparently they couldn't start car on Monday morning - had to push car into bay). No compression test had been done when we left today - which maybe would have revealed more of the problems. For now, we're back in Montreal, having to await their diagnosis of what happened to our car. Cha ching - so far 2 hours of mechanics time in figufing out the puzzle has been charged.

If you follow me in Facebook - you'll know some of the story - also posted blog at Diabetes1.org - about our little trip at this link - http://www.diabetes1.org/blogs/Annas_Blog/My_trip_to_Winterlude_in_Ottawa_wit...

  • @dieselkiki - once 2-year warranty is over on this "new" engine - hubby will be taking over mechanical work. He has always done this on all our vehicles - this is 1st car we've owned that goes to dealership (cha ching!!!). The check engine light only showed up when we broke down - prior to that - wasn't showing. To think, little bit of debris (gasket) - caused the melt down of engine! Think MB garage learnt an expensive lesson there!

  • Did you know if the "check engine" light was "on"?? I had this problem on my 2006 CDI smart fortwo and the OBDII code was P0303 (missfire cyl. #3). I replaced the third fuel injector and that fixed the problem. So, check your codes!! ;)

Good luck... and dont always trust "mercedes-benz" dealer. They broke my car too often. They are not always professional. It's sad but it's a real fact!

  • @dieselkiki Engine failure was due to mechanic at MB not cleaning up his work properly after doing some maintenance work on our CDI a few weeks prior to this incident. Luckily, the garage assumed all costs ($10K) - we had a loaner Smart for a month while waiting for new engine from France to arrive. Have to admit gas version Smart isn't as fun to drive as the 2006 CDI - plus eats up gas like there is no tomorrow compared to diesel version (please Canada MB - bring back diesel engine!!!).

  • Did you get this fixed? I am thinking about getting one of these car. What was wrong with your smart car? What year is your smart car? I am looking at a 2008 with 16,000 kms on it I am a little nervous buying it.

  • I HAVE THE EXACT PROBLEM! I think one of the injectors is clogged or faulty. I am in the process of buy a new one, and swapping them in my car to find the faulty one (assuming there is only one faulty injector). Each injector is like $200 (and that is the clearance sale price)!

  • @FatCatAnna

what is the core problem that costs 10 grands to fix?

  • It's a fact, mercedes-benz dealer are better to break your smart than fix it. Now, I do the repair and the mantenance by myself. And I hope the smart CDI will back soon too!! ;)

  • That sound's like a compression leak! One of the engine's diesel injectors has a faulty seal. Cheers!
