Yes, but you can't see in the same view what placeholders contains which controls. It is still devided into three levels.

Right, it is just sitecore's existing Layout Details form. The reason it is in LayoutViewer is to allow you to add/remove controls to the layout tree (and consequently to the item's layout). Otherwise, in order to add/remove controls you'd have to go into "Layout Details" from "Content Editor", add or remove controls, and then go back into LayoutViewer to see your revised control tree

I know it's not obvious, but you can also bring up the Layout Details Form for the current item by clicking on the top level Layout (the root of the tree).
