A show record of 20.5 million viewers watched the Vardon family a deaf couple and their blind, autistic teenager - on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" in November 2004.

But an un televised reality has come to the Vardons, who have since seen their mortgage rate almost double while medical bills and a potential layoff threaten the family with foreclosure on their extensively remodeled home.

  • Welcome to the world of predatory lending.

  • Extreme makeover should install a clause that prevents these people from using their free gift house as a reckless ATM.

  • cont'd..Vardons probably messed up by refinancing, but I feel for them since they have disabilities and their son's bills must hurt. At least they work, the Harper family really seemed lazy. I think, however, instead of throwing more money their way, sitting down with a financial plan, including the medical bills, and coming up with a budget that they can afford with their salaries. Then, give the charitable donations.Just giving them $, with no advice, they will just end up in the same place.

  • They re-financed the fancier house. That seems like a theme in more than one extreme make-over family.

My nephew I'm raising is Autistic and Blind(no eyes) and also non-verbal so I get how hard that is. But I think the show extreme makeover needs to give them a meeting with a financial advisor to warn them about this.

  • thats way sad. i didnt think the show added up.. idk

  • Have they ever tought of buying SOMETHING THEY CAN AFFORD????

  • Regardless of your situation, you are ultimately responsible for money that you have borrowed. Neither ignorance, nor a disability are an excuse.
