Okay last one today!

But Yuri Soloviev (1940-1977) is such a great great dancer it's hard to stop uploading stuff - even though you've seen most of these videos before I'm certain, it's nice to have them on my channel.

This is 'Le spectre de la rose' - it's really good to see Soloviev in a whole ballet drama and not just a de-contextualised solo or pas de deux.

Love seeing him do the Fokine porte de bras - the way the arms curl round asymmetrically in fifth position.

A very kind You Tuber, aclaudiapaixao, identified the ballerina performing 'The Girl' just home from the ball, the Tamara Karsavina role, as Yelena Yevteyeva.

  • Thank you. Thank you. I had not seen this before. One can't get enough Soloviev!

  • hi 26looksee - nor can i get enough! just wish there was more. cheers!

  • This is beautiful thanks so much for the videos of these older dancers. I wish the video recordings were better it's a shame.

  • hi IndigoChild6 - yes, we're lucky and unlucky - to have the films but that the quality is not great - and sadly there was so many great performances that were not filmed. in the early part of the C20 the dancer and early film maker Alexander Shiryaev offered to film the main dancers at the Kirov but the administration declined - so we don't have for example anything of Mathilde Kschessinska - :<<<

  • @nickwallacesmith Yes I know. I wish I could have seen Nijinsky perform.

  • hi IndigoChild6 - some youtubers have told me in the past that there is in private hands film of nijinsky dancing at a private party in the UK, which the ballets russes dancers did for patrons of the company - but this idea smells of a GUM (great urban myth) don't you think?

  • hi aclaudiapaixao - you are absolutely right - when i listen to the introduction you can clearly hear 'Yelena Yevteyeva' as the ballerina to perform the Karsavina 'girl just home from the ball' role. thanks for taking the time to tell us, very kind of you! cheers

  • Isn't she Yelena Yevteyeva? Yes, she is. The announcer says it when she comes in. She was dreamy!

  • hi mika - yes, it would have been great to see the original! even film of nijinsky in the role. but sadly there's none :<. i like Manuel Legris - the dancing is so right for fokine - but his expression is a bit dry/dead - i imagine nijinsky showed on his face the meaning/emotion of the music. cheers from sydney, nick

  • Yes, there are wonderful interpretations here in YouTube, from Vladimir Malakhov, Manuel Legris and Patrick Dupond, to evoke the spirit of this 'perfumed' but very exciting piece. I wish I had seen Nijinsky in it! Mika
