SUSPECT IN TEEN STABBING REMAINS JAILED

ATLANTA - The man accused of killing a 14-year old just minutes after the Peach Drop on New Year's Day will remain behind bars at the Fulton County Jail.

Tommy Christopher Collins -- 36-year-old -- made his first court appearance before a judge Tuesday where he was denied bond, pending a bond hearing on Jan. 18.

Police believe Tommy Christopher Collins stabbed 14-year old Rueben Hand to death as he went home from the Peach Drop.

Hand's throat was slashed at the MARTA Five Points Station just after midnight New Year's Day.

Police said they arrested 36-year-old Tommy Christopher Collins at his apartment on East Ponce de Leon Avenue on Monday morning.

Police say Collins does have a prior arrest record, but they were not able to divulge any specifics. They also did not give details on what led to the killing because of the ongoing investigation.

MARTA police say surveillance video from the station played a major role in helping them track down the suspect. They say they developed their lead using the video, and they followed up on every tip that came in.

But Hand's mother -- Deunya Taylor -- says the killer thought her son stole his cell phone.

"Someone had jumped on a man earlier and they took his phone," Taylor explained. "He had seen them and asked for his phone and my baby boy had got smart with him and said he tried to stab the first two guys and didn't. They say my baby boy kept walking and that's when he ran behind him and cut his neck." (SLIT HIS THROAT)

She says her youngest son snuck out that night to celebrate the Peach Drop with friends. Before the arrest was announced she had this to say about her son's killer.

"I forgive him, but I never forget," Taylor said. "He took my baby from me and that's something I'll never forget. I'm (going to) take it one day at a time, but I really do want him to turn himself in."

Collins is being held in the Fulton County Jail. He faces charges of murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during a crime.
