BBC libel fees were almost £1m ($1.64m) since start of 2008 [writing 21/Oct/09]
The BBC received 71 complaints about libel since January 2008 and spent £121,000 on lawyers to defend itself, says the British 'newspaper' The Sunday Express - http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/1...
Consider just one fact about the output of the BBC: over 78,000 radio hours in its past financial year over 10 radio networks.
And it has 8 TV networks also pumping out hours of viewing.
Current affairs is a central part of the BBC. The BBC spends £4.5 billion on operating expenditure (radio and TV hours) and publishing websites and educational resources - http://www.bbc.co.uk/learning/
For which it has to pay out, under British libel laws, just £1 million in nearly 2 years. Well worth it for a public broadcaster. Unless you think a public broadcaster should not libel anybody. (Thats not at all possible for a current affairs remit).
I do not want to be totally biased towards the BBC so here is a more balanced article - http://tinyurl.com/ylko5zv
(The Sunday Express used the Freedom of Information Act to get the above information. All public bodies should be open to public scrutiny using this legislation we should know how every penny of the BBC Tax (licence fee) is spent).

From what I have read in the Guardian, I think that the behaviour of Trafigura is highly dubious, if not shameful. They dumped toxic waste in the Ivory Coast. They tried to prevent it being reported in the British press and media. They say the waste may have caused mass illness but no deaths. If it is not highly toxic, are the directors and chief officers of Trafigura willing to make physical contact by immersing their hands in the waste for just one minute?
Good to see that for the moment this clip lives here...but how long before Carter Ruck get an injunction on You Tube to remove it...these are sorry times for free speech.
