Limehouse Blues - Warren Vache All Stars 2006
One of the most explosive sessions I have ever seen. Six masters of jazz playing together are jamming it up. Warren Vache cornet, Harry Allen tenor sax, John Allred trombone with incredible pianist Olaf Polziehn, bassist Andy Cleynert and drummer Troy Davis.
Recorded at the Ascona New Orleans and Classic Jazz Festival in Switzerland. All the technique, all the knowledge on jazz history, all the talent, all the creativity and all the energy of youth! No further comment, These musicians are just the best.
We were lucky to have this exact front line play the Sacramento festival a couple of years ago and yes, they are that good. Vache has a snappy sense of humor to go along with his stellar playing. Allen is awesome and Allred is one of the two best trombone players alive. They all have technical chops, but they swing their asses off without all that over technical playing just to impress musicians. They swing first and take no prisoners!

A strong clip. These guys show that jazz had life, complexity, and above all swing before the beboppers. Even though they don't play the language of Bird, Diz, Trane, etc., they know how to structure fresh complete solos and never to stop swinging. The stand-out by a long shot is Harry Allen's tenor. The best I've heard from him and up there with Lovano, Redman, Branford or any other preset-day tenor player.

For me one of the best perfomances in this kind of jazz, best combination of realy very swinging very well playing musicians, with extra compliments to Harry Allen and John Allred in his solos. But Warren and Olaf give also very interesting swinging solos. It is a pity that there is not more of this combination of 2006 in Ascona.

He's kinda unique. He uses the Cornet instead of the trumpet.
