Operation "OVERLORD", The D-Day Angol-American Landings, commences. The invasion begins before dawn with units of the US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisons making night landings near the town of "Sainte-Mere-Egilse, while British commando units capture key bridges and knock out Nazi communications. In the morning, the assault troops of the combined Allied armies Land at five beaches along the Normandy coast codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. While four beaches are taken easily and quickly, the forces Landing at "Bloody Omaha" encounter stiff German resistance. By nightfall, sizeable beachheads have been secured on all five Landing areas, and the final campaign to defeat Germany is underway.

How about giving Russia the credit for destroying Nazism. The Allies only got off their ass because the Ruskie's were about to beat Germany and also over take all of Europe enveloping it in Communism. Britain and the U.S. wanted the Germans and the Russians to fight it out right to the brink of one or the others defeat. Strategically they moved in at the right time to make their stake with minimal sacrifice and Poland was left to the dogs which is why we went to war in the first place.

And don't forget that this minor operation called Overlord was mainly the effort of the great power of the time; Great Britain. It was British ships, British planes, British equipment and more than half British soldiers.
