In the Philippines, a new ADB-backed project is providing free, energy-efficient light bulbs in exchange for outdated incandescent bulbs, lowering families' power bills while reducing CO2 emissions and alleviating the country's need to import oil.

  • How are they better for the environment when it is full of mercury? Does the Philippines have a high tech center for collecting these CFL bulbs when they are spent?

  • Thanks for your comment. The program does include support for the development of a lamp waste management facility. The program will reduce the Philippines' CO2 emissions by 300,000 tons a year, and save US$ 1 billion in fuel costs over the next decade.

  • They are not full of mercury, its small enough to only fill the tip of a pen. They as a country are ahead of most, banning the incandescent . Wish everyone else wouldnt take so long.
