Sorry Champagne, but it's you that are confused. As a die hard fan of Van Halen back before Dave left, I can tell you this was not an improvement with age. Even Ed's guitar solo was lackluster, prompting him to pause, cover his face and yell "Stop!" at the audience chanting his name -- as if he knew he didn't deserve it. Dave wasn't improvising on the melodies -- He was compromising for not having the same range.
