Soyuz 1 was part of the Soviet Union's space programme and was launched into orbit on 23 April 1967, carrying a single cosmonaut, Colonel Vladimir Komarov, who was killed when the spacecraft crashed during its return to Earth. This was the first in-flight fatality in the history of spaceflight.

  • May he rest in peace.

  • I heard they had to call his wife in to say good-bye not to mention Kosygin and Brezhnev said that he would get a hero's funeral.

  • @MrBennetzen Actually he had just a short conversation with mate cosmonaut ( you can find on the Tube) and true friend Yuri Gagarin...even because they didn't suspect that the parachute was not workin fine...after he overcame all problems they were enough sure that after all he was going to land safely.

  • wow, that's great footage!

  • @datzfast You are referring to constellation, which is not what I am talking about. Ares is long dead, but SLS is not. The CEV was never cancelled, as it is being developed by Lockheed Martin, not NASA. Please - understand subjects before arguing about them.

  • @UndeadPizzaGuy by 2020.

But in his 2011 budget request issued on Monday, Mr Obama said the project was too costly, "behind schedule, and lacking in innovation".

US space agency Nasa has already spent $9bn (£5.6bn) on the programme.

  • @datzfast Nope. No matter how many times you want to whine, complain, or lie - SLS is not cancelled, and is in full swing at the moment. The first two Orion CEV's are completed and are under testing. The new "Freedom" rocket also proposes to launch Orion for mundane orbital missions where SLS is not required.

  • @UndeadPizzaGuy canceled

  • @MrBennetzen It's one of the urban legends. Actually he was calm, and ready to re-entry, and after re-entry he couldn't call somebody because the antenna must deployed whith main parachuts, which not opened.

  • Is there any truth in the theory Komarov didnt expect to survive due to so many technical problems but he didnt want to send his back up Gagarin to his death?

  • Such advanced technology is debunked by the failure of a parachute to open....wow! Solor panel can't unfold, parachute can't unfold....too heavy on technology and too light on common sense....

  • Such advanced technology is debunked by the failure of a parachute to open....wow!
