Me and my 6 year old gelding trying this pattern for the first time. I taped it all, beginning to end without cutting it up, so you will be able to see the process.

I'm using portable fence posts because we don't have barrels or cones, and the jumping posts are too high for the rope.

I kept missing the right post, I think I'm better co-ordinated with my stick in my left hand. Also, I noticed I was driving zone 2 instead of zone 1, when I changed it, it went better.

LB is a LB-Ex/In and this kind of stuff is really unmotivating for him. However, I chose this pattern to try to improve my drive. To keep him going I reward him with some horse-candy.
After this we did a freestyle pattern (corner to corner, to balance the go and whoa again), but I didn't tape it.

  • Wow. He's so pretty! What's his name?

  • Officially he's called Living Beauty (Living Legend x Denver), but I call him LB or 'Bietje' (roughly pronounced as the audio-speaker).

  • yeah my pony gets very bored too....how do you curb the boredness whilst still trying to teach them mundane things like this? help! :)

  • I do short sessions: have him do the pattern 2-3 times and then give him a rest and after that do something else. Then after a while I try again.

Once he got the pattern he loved it btw, so don't give up. Lb is the kind of horse that loves to have a job, and I think most horses do. So once they understand the pattern they have a job to do and that isn't as boring as learning a repetitive pattern.

  • Try with frisbees next time. U try real hard, but are self-critical. Send w/shorter rope, pull head in direction you want, THEN let the rope slide. Talky stick too. He's trying hard, asking lots of questions. I think those sticks were too high in this learning phase. You focused on lifting rope up a lot and that sent a mixed message to him via the rope. Threaten with stick in Z2 but follow thru with a P4. Last 1 was best. Your coordination is improving, that's wonderful!

  • Unfortunately I don't have frisbees. We continued to work with these poles and things are a lot better now. yesterday I even got nearly a full 8 at liberty (my horse got distracted because the gardner took down a tree). I've been meaning to tape and post our prograss, but haven't found a cameraman yet. Maybe this weekend.

  • Wow that looks just like me ( except you seem to know what your doing) lol

I've been trying this for a while and its going great... it still needs a little work though. Do you use parelli techniques to teach your horses to stand up on things. If so what do you use because I can't find a pedestal anywhere

  • I also have a LB brain horse.

    Nice work!

  • I'm going to try this with my horse tonight! ;D way to go.

  • He is very handsome! Have you tried doing this with a 22ft leadrope & then creating a boundary further away in which you arent allowed to cross, eg. a pole or cones? Just an idea if you havent already done so :) x

  • Aw. It fits him. He seems to love you a lot!

  • Thnx. This is an old video, he does great now. We do cones, barrels and hay dispensers with hardly any trouble :)
