A prayer before dying

Kingheathen asked the question
If you were with someone on their death bed and they asked you to pray with them, would you pray with them?

My answer:

No

I am an atheist

I can't pray

But this is what I would do
I would bow my head in the expected fashion
I would say the expected words
I would perform the expected rituals

I would do my best to present to the person who is dying the image of a person praying

And I would hope that they would not see through my deceit
And if they died, believing that I prayed with them, I would be content knowing that I had played a small part making the end of their life a less lonely journey for them.

And that is all I can do
