Methane hydrate worms collected by the Johnson Sea Link II submersible at a depth of 1777 feet in the Gulf of Mexico as a part of the SSETI (Shelf Slope Experimental Taphonomy Initiative) research trip.

  • this is true, they're still alive when I took the little video, but they died shortly thereafter----they live in really really cold water and at very high pressure, about 1700 feet below the surface of the ocean!

  • do you feed them methane?

  • nope, they live within methane ice at the bottom of the ocean---we retrieved them with a submersible, and they all died once we brought them to the surface.
