Dusk on a beautiful, cool Fall day, October 1, 2011. I had taken the plane up just for some recreational practice, and it had gotten almost dark by the time I got back to the St. Augustine Airport (KSGJ), St. Augustine, Florida, to land. The plane is a Cessna 182.
The tower had cleared me to enter a left base to Runway 31. The video starts with me lining up on the left base. This carries you out over the marsh flats of the intercoastal waterway, which runs between the end of Runway 31 and Vilano Beach. That is why there are so few lights.
If you are patient, about 1 minute and 30 seconds into the video I turn West for the final approach, and as I make that turn you get to see a miracle - the Western sky with the remains of the day, a beautiful palette of colors against the darkness and in the middle of that is the runway, with its colorful lights.
During the approach you will hear another aircraft repeatedly call the tower - - without response, not sure why there was no response, perhaps because they considered the calls unnecessary. At the end, after I have landed and am on my rollout, the tower calls me (my call sign is N2494E, abbreviated to "94 Echo" and clears me to exit the active runway, 31-13, by turning left onto inactive runway 2-20, then onto taxiway Bravo, with permission to cross inactive runway 6-24, then via taxiway Delta to park.
