This video is a supplement to the blog post on Luminosity masks at: http://www.confessionsofaphotoshopnerd.com/

This is an instructional how-to guide on how to create, save and use luminosity masks inside of Adobe Photoshop.
Luminosity masking is method for selecting pixels based on their light level. This has become my 'go to' tool for making selections and converting them to masks because 1) it is quick 2) it is easy and 3) it is a subtle method for making masks.

  • @italokid80 Thanks for the comments. The gaussian blur is something I was adding to the surface and edge masks, good idea adding it to the luminosity masks too.

I don't understand your second point though. Could you clarify "in ACDSee photo-soft ALREADY IS the "light equalizer" ?

  • 1)-need to add some gaussian blur (as transition buffer) to each luminosity mask. Without, monstruous results.

2)-in ACDSee photo-soft ALREADY IS the "light equalizer" (as advanced curve) on adjustement tools --- the "superior" Photoshop still waiting, how-many decades, dear people?

  • Proof that my head cannot explode by overwhelming amazement

  • Good job sir. I never thought about intersecting a mask with itself...

Nice video again and keep on the good work.

  • thank you so much! that's perfect!!

  • Very well done video .. thanks for taking the time to make it and upload!!

  • Great. More please!

  • Wow. What an amazingly informative and easy to follow tutorial. Finally something good on youtube other than all of the beginner tutorials on how to change someone's hair color. Thanks so much for the video and I'll definitely be using this technique in some of my work going forward.
