For a generation that grew up on old school NES, which I am a part of, there is built-in nostalgia and happiness in the sounds you're using. So it's great that you're taking on songs with strong emotions in them because somehow it actually does work really well for me... much more so than hearing a pop song or a dubstep song get 8bitified.
It also helps you both can sing well too. :) Keep up the great work!
