Mezzo Vivica Genaux sings the wonderful aria of Ariodante "Dopo notte" from the eponymous opera of Handel.
The musicians are solists of the Venice Baroque Orchestra.
This is a live recording (with my numeric camera, sorry for the quality...) of a recital given on June 3 2008 in Angers, France, during the baroque music festival Printemps des Arts.

  • Wienerfr, could you do us a favour and next Friday after the concert grab her foot and not let her walk off the stage until she has sung Dopo Notte??

You said you'll sit very close, whereas I would have to jump from the balcony (I'm not James Bond). Somebody has to do it.

  • There will be a conference "propos d'avant concert" just before the concert at 19:30. The access is free for people with their ticket for the concert. I will go, maybe she will be there...

  • Thanks for posting, in spite of poor sound quality, wonderful singing, she's amazing, I love this aria, one of my favorites, I was a nice birthday present for me :o) thanks for sharing

  • Thanks for your comment. And happy birthday to you! Vivica Genaux is my favourite mezzo and she sang this aria (one of my favourite too) wonderfully.

  • FANTASTIC!!

I'm so glad to hear this most joyful aria, written by Handel for the castrato Carestini - to compete against the rival group in London where ... Farinelli sang.

We know Vivica's most incredible fireworks of spectacular Farinelli arias (Qual Guerriero!!), but now she interprets HANDEL who writes never "purely virtuoso", but always expresses deep emotions and truth at the same time, Dopo Notte being a (the?) perfect example. Vivica has all to fantastically interpret it, WHAT A FEAST!!

  • Despite the sound quality, I can say this is one of the best rendition of this number I've ever heard. She needs to record Ariodante ASAP. She really brings out the true virtuoso aspect of this aria without sounding tawdry and showy. She's a master singer, with true sprezzatura, unlike numerous mezzos who were busy trying to hit the notes.

  • BRAVOOOO!!!!!!!!

  • What an ugly rendition! E.g. von Otter's version is much more beautiful! But now that there are enough good countertenors why not leave castrati roles to men with beautiful voices? Why should women with ugli voices like Genaux and Bartoli sing everything that intended for women and also steal and spoil beautiful stuff intended for men?! E.g. Christofellis sings it so beautifully! This is just impossible to listen!

  • I love her dark almost masculine timbre in the chest register. It sounds so authentic, if that is even an applicable term to use...

  • Bravo Vivica...

    his mother is mexican xD

  • Good to know, tx for the alert. I'll be there (sorry I'm not Vivica ...).

Well I don't have much hope that she'll sing Dopo Notte in the encore. But perhaps some Il Trionfo arias like "Come Nembo", "Tu giurasti" or (what was in my opinion her best aria:) "Un pensiero nemico di pace". Would be GREAT as well.

  • Happy birthday guiradobrasil!

My bd is far away, but I take Vivica's Dopo Notte already as present for the next 10 - 15 birthdays :-)
