As requested Ali here's a clip from about a month ago of me playing my kiz ney. This is a Turkish song (I think) called "Ey asiki dildade" I'm not sure as I can't read Turkish! I think it might be in the style of "Rast ilahi" but again I'm clutching at straws here! The music for it was on a website called www.neyzen.com and my thanks to them :)

As soon as I start playing a fire engine's siren joins in :) The wailing is not that much different from my own... A touch of echo would help with the sound I think plus maybe twenty years practice. Not long after recording this I started to get sidetracked by the bansuri (along with a newly discovered relaxed sideblowing flute embouchure which makes me very happy :) so this video is from around the time I last played the ney!

There's a great method for learning to play here: http://www.neyzen.com/ney_metodu.htm

  • HI is the mouthpiece on this just simply blow and play??

  • @mistermarcus1979 Not so simple I'm afraid - It's just a tube really and you need to blow against the edge with a certain embouchure to get the sound.

  • Hi,

Just looking online to buy a ney for my partner as a gift ... he's a beginner, what type of ney would you recommend ? thanks

  • @justinetilman Hi, the ney I'd recommend is a Kiz ney (this is the type I'm playing in the vid) you can pick up a practice Turkish one on ebay for less than £20 if you search for PVC ney. This is a good way to learn the embouchure and see if you like the instrument before forking out £100 for a real cane one. The neyzen website mentioned in the video info is VERY good to help get started.

Liked your Alan Watts vid btw :)
