After sitting in the project bin for 2 years I decided to modify my British army surplus golok. I decided to make it similar to my golok potong from Valiant Trading Co.

The blade will be sent to David Farmer for a nice sharp convex edge.

  • OldJimbo and Outdoors Magazine were the sources that got me interested in Valiant Trading Company blades... which in turn lead me to Ramanon.

I wonder if Suwandi would know about the notch?

  • @CSGraves Outdoors Magazine was great. I wish it was still around. At least the majority of the articles have been archived.

  • @CSGraves can you explain what you mean with potong and kelapa?

where golok comes from (the malay archipelago), kelapa means coconut (no other meaning other than that) and potong means cut, as in split into two or to disconnect.

  • Very good knife (machete). Wonderful

  • @mryellow123 Remember reading somwhere that the notch on a kukri is to symbolize a trident for some god....

  • @CSGraves If it's like a Kukri with a differential temper (hard edge, soft spine) then best explaination I've heard was from blackoracle69 who says it's a relief cut to allow the 2 harnesses to work together in concert without the edge splitting off.

  • That is a dead sexy Valiant blade..I love valiants' stuff, I wish I had more money. Watch altitude changes with horn, after a few years. Sometimes horn can crack easily. Its hard to find machetes from the 70s and back that don't have a crack in the horn handle.

  • So what happened?

  • @gorzinplatz Yeah, I think I downloaded 'em all when James first posted that.

Also, someone revived one of HDW's threads featuring the potong, bandol, and kelapa. There's a shot of the potong and kelapa together so you can see their respective sizes and shapes. As I suspected, the kelapa's handle is a bit thicker. I don't know if it'd be fully outside your personal preference for handle size though, but I LOVE my kelapa these days!

  • very nice !
