This second chapter presents the "fact (action) of Vinatea", that is told in the Chronicle of the king Peter the Ceremonious. Francesc de Vinatea (b. Morella, Els Ports, 1273 - d. Valencia, 1333). Knight and noble man of the Kingdom of Valencia. He is erroneously known as Guillem de Vinatea, for a error in the Chronicle of Peter the Cerimonious. Head of the jury in Valencia in 1333, he lead a notable act in opposition of the feudalizing politics which Alphonse III the Do-Gooder implemented in the Kingdom of Valencia. The King acceded to his wife, Queen Eleanor's wishes to abundantly provide for his children, principally the Infant Ferdinand. This was to the detriment of the heir Peter, future Peter III the Ceremonious, fruit of the Do-Gooder's first marriage. As a result, the following donations were bestowed: Tortosa, with the title of maquis for Ferdinand, and the valencian cities of Alacant, Elda, Novelda, Oriola, Guardamar, and after the valencian cities of Xativa, Alzira, Morvedre, Morella, Borriana and Castello. These latter donations provoked such a hostile reaction in the city of Valencia (head of the Kingdom), with Vinatea's demanding that the kings annul the cessions, that the queen finally came to agree that such demonstrations would not have been permitted by her brother, Alphonse XI of Castile. In accordance, Alphonse III agreed to make a retraction. Francesc de Vinatea died shortly after, but his persona became a legend of territorial resistance during this era of attempts at feudalisation; the event was captured in an opera in 1974, by Matilde Salvador, with text by Xavier Casp. It was also set to the stage: "Los jurados de Valencia, o sea el heroico Vinatea" (The Jurists of Valencia, Or Vinatea, the Hero), and depicted in pictures, in such works as Emili Sala's "Guillem de Vinatea exigint d'Alfons III la revocacio del contrafur" (Guillem de Vinatea Demanding the Repeal of the Tax) , in 1878, and in the Sala del Furs (Valencia townhall) murals, created by Ramon Stolz (1958).
