These devices can work similar to a dog whistle. Unfortunately a dog whistle can be adjusted to the sound that the dog can pick up, this device is limited and not all dogs will respond to it(?).
Having speakers capable of certain frequencies and playing back high pitched dog whistle sounds from videos all across youtube and playing back the same freq~ that Bark Off produces to see if your dog will respond.
Word of warning, excessive use can damage a dogs hearing.

Yes, it does work for a barking dog, but you have to throw it at the dog.

Useless information: Dogs usually bark if the door bell rings because they do not get lots of attention except when somebody visits and greets them frantically. Door bell means friggin' huge event, something happening finally.
Turn off the expectation, turn off the noise.
This kind of dog logic is hard to understand for most humans. Typical misinterpretation: We quickly open the door so the dog finally shuts up. To the dog, this means his barking leads to you opening the door.
