@violinistx100 As in Lucia is still a young woman so she has to sound young yet fragile in order to make this scene very convincing. That's the best way I can interpret this. :)

@violinistx100 Basically from what I can tell Anna first tells one of the stagehands to wait for a while. Then she says that the role of Lucia is very fragile because of the circumstances she went through being married to a man she did not love wholeheartedly causing her to kill Arturo and come out insane. So in order to prepare herself for the Mad Scene, Anna has to make her face very white and her eyes should look dark and haggard. Vocally we should not forget that she's still a young woman.
