In June 2010, Te Papa agreed to lend the skeleton of iconic racehorse Phar Lap to Australia for a special exhibition. The exhibition, opening on 16 September 2010 at Melbourne Museum, will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the inaugural running of the Melbourne Cup, and the 80th anniversary of Phar Lap's historic winning of that race.
In this short video, Te Papa conservator Robert Clendon describes the conservation work undertaken to ready the skeleton for its trip across the ditch, and historian Michael Fitzgerald (with a nasty cold!) tells why this racehorse is so special to Australians and New Zealanders alike.
Phar Lap will be back on display at Te Papa in March 2011.
We just went to the MM and saw that

Interesting video Thanks! Slightly macarbe, but if Phar Lap's skeleton helps educate people and hopefully can lead to greater interest in animal welfare than awesome!
Wish I could visit, Te Papa one of my favourite museums in the world. Thanks for the vid and hope your cold has gone Michael!
