Professor Marcia Langton AO - Alumni Award for Distinguished Service 2009

Marcia Langton has had an exemplary career as an academic and
champion for Indigenous people. In 2005 she graduated with a PhD
in Human Geography, and in that same year was appointed as the
inaugural Chair of the Federal Governments Indigenous Higher
Education Council.
Marcia has worked extensively in Aboriginal societies in the
Northern Territory, contributing to community projects and land
and native title claims. In 1989 she worked on the Royal Commission into Aboriginal
Deaths in Custody.
Marcia has held the Foundation Chair in Australian Indigenous Studies at the University
of Melbourne since 2000. In 2002 she was awarded the inaugural Neville Bonner Award
for Indigenous Teacher of the Year. She co-directed postgraduate research students at
the Melbourne University Indigenous Summer School, which was established to help
early career Indigenous scholars complete their studies and move to successful careers.
Marcia has made a signifi cant contribution to government and non-government policy,
and is widely published in her fi eld. Her work in Anthropology and her advocacy of
Aboriginal rights were recognised in 1993 when she was made a member of the
Order of Australia.
