A quick demo playthrough with commentary of the new, totally awesome "Mafia 2" demo now available for all platforms. If you're a PC gamer, you can now download the demo through Steam. This video was shot using my new Sony Handycam so that I could test its capabilities of recording for lengthy periods of time and straight off my computer screen. Overall, despite some focus issues here and there (such as when fading to black), I'm satisfied with the quality.

Demo settings:
1440x900
Anti-Aliasing Enabled (though with little effect)
8x Anisotropic Filtering
PhysX Disabled (major frame rate hit)
Everything else Maxed

  • Your PC specs?

  • @randomfacepalm

Intel i7 860 Quad Core CPU

    8 GB RAM

    ATI 5870

Running with everything maxed, but PhysX turned completely off because it rapes frame rates. Without PhysX, I average near 100. With, the frame rates drop to 40-50 or so if I remember correctly. It just isn't worth the hit for the small graphical flair PhysX adds.

  • PhysX eh? So it's one of those "The way it's meant to be played" corrupt Nvidia bribed games? The game looks great, the houses are very reminiscent of something you'd see in "The Goodfellas", and it does definitely ooze 1950s~

So I'll check it out, but I'll probably be torrenting it.

  • @VaderGaming Yeah, it's a little better with Nvidia, but even GTX 480 owners are experiencing slow frame rates with PhysX cranked up. I really don't mind it, though. I'll probably be buying the game on day one because it's just that freaking awesome. It may not win any Game of the Year awards anytime soon, but I love the atmosphere and story-telling. It's like being part of a movie!

  • @Chubzdoomer Well with every game that I find interesting now I usually torrent it and then if I like it I'll buy it, I did it with SC2, Titan Quest, Company of Heroes, etc...I do it because when I was younger I bought countless shitty games unaware of them being shitty, I had no internet or any friends that owned them to tell me they were shitty, I just had to guess. And since I was like, 8, any flashy box artwork would make me buy it. I vowed to never buy a shitty game again after that.

  • @VaderGaming I hear you man. I've actually been surprised at just how underwhelming Starcraft 2 is, and I purchased it without even "trying" it through other means. I've always been a huge Blizzard fan because they raise the bar every time, but they really dropped the ball with Starcraft 2. It has tons of polish, but it does too little new for me. Just my opinion, though.

  • Oh, and I've come to appreciate SC2 because we've had masses of bullshit thrown at us, and I never had any sort of expectation for SC2 anyway, I just played the beta and liked it.

The point is, we pay a relatively small price and get a game we keep FOREVER (unless you're EA and you're buying it online and you have that stupid fucking 5 year bullshit) and you can play it at any time and have fun, that's a priviledge.

  • @Chubzdoomer Everyone has their own opinion, and honestly, I kind of agree. While I think that the campaign is epic and I love it, it DOESN'T feel as epic as Starcraft 1, but that's just the thing, it isn't supposed to, we aren't supposed to compare them together, SC2 has it's own..."feel" and we'll just have to get used to it. Also, I'm a competitive RTS player so any MP RTS game you throw at me I'll try out, I still believe that SC2's MP is better than any CNC online experience I've had, imo.

  • Nice, i might buy this game :)
