On the 14th of December 2011 Kofi Annan and Sue Edwards received the Gothenburg Award for a Sustainable Future in Gotheburg.
The Gothenburg Award is the city's international prize that recognises and supports work to achieve sustainable development -- in the Gothenburg region and from a global perspective. Every year, an independent jury decides upon a laureate which has contributed to sustainable development within the criteria for the award. Cultivated land is essential to the development of society and competition for land is intensifying. The need for food is expected to grow by some 70 percent by 2050 while there are already a billion undernourished people on the planet today. Africa is the continent with the most difficult conditions. However, it's possible to change this trend by allowing agriculture to become the motor behind development in society through ecological and sustainable social and financial means. For this reason the Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development 2011 is awarded to a person and an organisation for their work in the field of sustainable food supply.
