There's the UL260i which looks like a really nice powerplant, I'd be quite tempted to give one of them a go, but it is a fairly new engine and there are not many high hours examples around from which to form a good record of its reliablity. It is cheaper, and lighter than the 912, and produces around about 85hp If I remembe correctly.

there is at least one 701 flying with a Rotec radial engine

There are no good alternatives to the Rotax 912. That's why it's the most popular engine choice for a S-LSA.
-
probably a subaru boxer or maybe an old rotary engine (rotary might be too heavy actually). i've heard of subaru engines being put into 701's and 801's before.

Regardless the model plane you build you'll need an engine... what are the good alternatives to the Rotax 912S?
-
that's just the airframe. the engine costs another 20,000$ which is a big problem for me. it's enough of an issue to consider building a different plane.

20.000 us dollars

could someone give me some prices for a quickbuild plane?

Just decided to build one of these! wo hoo! going to take me 5 - 10 years due to money shortage :(
Excellent aircraft, if I had one, I wouldn't have any trouble landing into my garage ( maybe with an airbag installed, just in case)

A very excellent S.T.O.L. design! designer Chris Heintz must be proud.
