Mucking about with composite video with reflections and shadows. Doesn't stand up to scrutiny, but looks jolly good all the same!

The model was designed in Blender, with textures imported from Inkscape and mapped to UV co-ordinates. I then surrounded the ship with a cube displaying the background image to get reflections, and placed a disk set to 'only shadow' below it. Blender exported (after 24 hours rendering) an HD video, which I passd into After Effects, where I masked out the trees in the background using an Alpha Map greated in The GIMP.

  • Haha nice nice.

I've just got one suggestion (besides pointing the engines in the right direction to turn XD) and that is to turn spec off and mirror on some. It makes some beautiful glassy reflections.

But this video is old and I'm sure you're recreating avatar by now :D

  • @RunningLemonStudios Yeah, I think I was trying to cheat on render time (also reflections are a nightmare in composite environments). Thanks for the the critique!

(I've learned a lot since then, but I think Avatar is still a little optimistic ☺)

  • Nice video, I just noticed some point.

At the moment that he really lands his left engine goes forward and his right engine backwards is it me or is he spinning in the wrong direction.

The model is also a little bit to shiny.

For the rest it is really good and I wish that I could do it. keep up the good work :D

  • @snizzzle1 Thanks for the critique- in the last year I've taught myself a huge amount about 3D materials and, yes, I would definitely agree it is far too shiny. I'm fairly happy with the way it moves, although I think I know the part you mean- doesn't exactly look realistic :-)

Comment and criticism always gratefully appreciated!

  • Nice model and animation - got that tutorial? :)

  • @kinjari Just started it today :) might take a while though.

  • That looks like the mini ship from Hitch Hiker Guide To The Galaxy

  • That was really fake . . . but really cool!

  • Fantastic video. Just one question. How did you do the shadows?

  • hitchhikers guide? quite an awesome recreation of the escape pod [i forget what it was really called lol, i'm noob]

  • at 0:17 a shadow randomly appears

  • Cool! Now make it have a catastrophic failure :D

  • nice vid but for the trees you could try editing the colors and feathering the masks a little because they just dont look like they belong in the scene

  • @MrColonelcrunker THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT!

  • HITCH HIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY !!!!!!!!!!!

  • nicely done!
