Because of mechanical problems. It was supposed to be being repaired in a shop, but it was left outside, and a rainstorm happened not too long after that, and they didn't put a tarp on it.
@DeeandEd Bob mentioned the new rules for the game very clearly here. The rules for Split Decision were changed halfway into it's short life because the clock rules kept producing loser after loser.
For a VERY brief period in 1996 they played Split Decision under the rules in this playing. They then decided to bring back the rules using the clock after just two (or maybe 3) playings.
The Lovely Rod indeed :)

Split Decision kinda reminds me of 2 For The Price Of 1

The rare 3-guess format in Split Decison! As soon as I saw the numbers, I immediantly thought the baker's rack was $750. :)
And, epic win in Penny Ante!

These episodes are reruns from earlier in the 1995-96 season, but aired as reruns in August 1996.

A stupid game made even more stupid. Thank God Split Decision was short-lived. Gotta love Penny Ante though.
I felt like I was watching Let's Make a Deal when Rod brought down the item up for bids. That was pretty cool.
