@aquamanvan , Because they don't find meaning, fulfillment, or a truth they can experience in their parents' traditional religions. But the desire for that kind of connection and truth is still there. It's not just Californians. Europeans also go to India. Maybe we are drawn spiritually to what is both like and unlike what our pasts and our cultures offer us. Also, India has a tradition of the teacher, the guru, and India provides the literal and symbolic journey.

Maybe the same process as Black people become Muslim and changing their names. The become so different the need a new name to reflect the deep change they feel in themselves. But I really don't know.
