Sound sample of a German viola. The player is a high school violin student who began teaching himself viola a few months ago. The piece is an excerpt of the Bach Cello Suite No. 3, Prelude.

  • I really didn't think this was actually a high schooler, but his bow is riding a little far from the bridge. other than that is is redonk.

  • @nathpowe -- you can see my brother at our personal youtube site where we post our HIGH SCHOOL performances, concerts, duets...go to ~~ Musicasa2ndLanguage ~~ i know he sometimes acts like a 12 year old...

  • When was this viola made? The sound is marvelous! I wish my viola sounded like that... Honestly, I'm still renting. (God, please help me find a better viola that actually STAYS in tune.) Did you buy it? (Random question.)

  • @MsSceneDinosaur -- i think it was made in the early 20th century sometime. the instruments that me and my sister sample here on eboyinc art part of a collection of instruments that belonged to a professional orchestra violinist who passed away a few years ago. their family asked us to help catalog the collection by recording a short sound sample of each one. we only get about five minutes with the instrument...just enough time to tune it and record the sound sample.

  • I'm a big fan of the cello suites :)

    Your playing is awesome!

  • @VirtuosoInTheMaking -- thanks...glad you like them. they're definately a work in progress for me.

  • Wow! Can't wait to hear you give the Bach Cello Suite No. 6, The Prelude a shot!

  • @spunxter its not at all valid to what we were talking about, we were talking about Ziguenerweisen. but yes i do know what a da gamba is, and as a Violinist and violist i was explaining why Ziguenerweisen wouldn't work on the viola like it does on the violin. read the comments a little more before you get all involved with it.

  • @heinsteven my apologies; since this fell under the heading of the Suites, I thought it was relevant, and my comment is still valid even if was directed at the wrong discussion.

  • @spunxter we weren't even talking about the cello suites... so keep out of our business (p.s. thats over a year old)

  • @heinsteven -- according to Wiki: Recent research has suggested that the suites were not written for the familiar cello played between the legs (da gamba), but an instrument played rather like a violin, on the shoulder (da spalla). Variations in the terminology used to refer to musical instruments during this period have led to modern confusion, and the discussion continues regarding the instrument "that Bach intended", or even if a particular instrument was indeed intended.
