If you just compete the speed, shinkansen isn't the best. Chinese or French bullet trains are faster. However don't forget that Japan has so many natural disasters such as earthquake, volcano eruption, snow and typhoon besides they have to consider about noise in urban area. Do you know how many Tokaido shinkansen trains depart at Tokyo station in an hour? 13 trains! and most of them are operated on time.

It isn't however any sense of sophistication. I value civility and sophistication over production and military brute strength.. China is attempting to claim the greatness of the past, while Japan is looking to the peace ofthe future.

And BTW Japan is currently the #1 Donor nation in the world. They have built countless schools and roads in Africa, and paid A TON in repirations to china and korea.. So What the hell are you talking about? The japanese gov. hasn't apologized, but that doesn't mean plenty of their people didn't.
