Social Media & Mobilization—Activating Americans to Help End the Famine in the Horn of Africa: The Horn of Africa is facing one of the most dire humanitarian crises in the world. More than 13 million people are facing starvation, most of them children. But very few Americans are talking about it or are even aware of it. That's why the U.S. Agency for International Development enlisted the Ad Council and R/GA to help raise awareness and galvanize the American public to help. The communications challenge is daunting: How do you motivate the public without creating donor fatigue, using off-putting images or re-enforcing a perception that famine is inevitable? The new "FWD" campaign—"Famine, War, Drought"—informs and inspires the public in an unprecedented way. Leveraging the latest technologies and innovations in both social and digital media, the campaign features a number of celebrities and public figures to engage Americans to help and spread the word.
