After clearing the blockage, fill the sink with water and then quickly open the stopper.
Usually, this is the only way to get the rush of water you need to forcefully flush through remaining debris, and the force necessary to check for leaks around the plunger assembly. If you don't do this then you may run the tap and think that it's all sealed up, but will leak next time someone fills the basin and opens the plug to drain it.

its amazing how resourceful we can be when we put our minds to it. everyone has wire hangers in the house, like the above video, i have used one to clear a clogged drain as well as the vinegar and bicarb method. this was after using those "known" brand chemicals which are totally unhealthy and smell terrible, you can't beat the old fashioned methods.
