In discussing his plans to introduce an amendment to the Child Nutrition Reauthorization on the Senate floor, Senator Dick Lugar underscored the importance of increasing the number of children eligible for federally supported summer and afterschool nutrition programs. Currently children who reside in school districts where 50 percent of children qualify for free or reduced price meals may also participate in federally supported summer and afterschool nutrition programs. The Lugar bill, S. 3040, would reduce this number to 40 percent, bringing nutrition program qualifications in line with other federal programs tied to education.
