Bull Shoals Dam was created to impound the White River by one of the largest concrete dams in the United States and the 5th largest dam in the world at its inception. Work on the dam began in 1947, was completed in 1951 and dedicated by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. At least seven small family cemeteries and 20 larger cemeteries were meticulously relocated to accommodate the new lake.
This footage was shot on May 25, 2011 during one of the worst flood seasons in regional history. All flood gates are opened partially. The audio does not do the scene justice as to the power and force of the water rushing trough the partially opened gates. On this day the traffic was single lane traffic only and controlled by a recently installed traffic stoplight at each end of the roadway on top.
We dined at Gaston's Restaurant on the White River 6/18/11 and saw damage to the boat dock from the force of the water. The same day we were told at Bull Shoals Marina that the water level was 39 feet above normal.

Very nice. Today they opened the gates up even more - a record amount since it was built. Amazing to witness in person! Thanks for sharing your great video of our dam to the world!
