I had this surgery for ASD (sinus venosus) when I was 9. I am now 25 and have had a child. I am pretty healthy heart-wise other than hypertension and occassional palpitations. Mine was repaired with a patch as well, and I was under the impression that if you don't take care of your body it is possible for the patch to tear. I'm not educated in the new way of closing holes in the heart. I have tried unsuccessfully to watch a full video of this surgery and finally at 25 I have found the nerve! hah

I had the patch closure done but via the breast bone, not the open heart procedure. They use a heart port for the former. My hole size(ASD) was 34mm, not suitable for catherization at all. Doctor Naresh Trehan also told me that the former is risky over the years. Dr. Naresh Trehan is one of the best cardio surgeons in the world & the best in India.
can an ASD happen again ? ....i mean i had my ASD " or my VSD "repaired "not sure which one i had" , is there a possibility that the hole can open again ?

@kawaiiushii after successful repair there is no chance of recurrence but a residual defect may be left at the initial operation but you need to do an echocardiography with color doppler study to confirm it.

my best friend is having this surgery in two weeks. Does anybody know what are the changes that it fails and what happens if it fails?

@chimpmania1996 the chance of failure after open heart procedure is almost zero but if any residual defect is left , the symptoms may recur however it needs an echocardiographic confirmation.
