Child Labour in the Victorian England

This video is made by 5 students: Ajsa Delic, Ena Ahmic, Faruk Hodzic, Melisa Brackan & Zemira Mehmedovic. We are all students at the University of Tuzla, (Bosnia and Herzegovina),Department of English Language and Literature, 3rd year. This project was initiated by our English Literature Professor Dr. Damir Arsenijevic. Our task was to use our imagination in order to present what the life was like for children in the period of the Industrial Revolution. So through pictures, which illustrate the real state of children, and through texts, we wanted to show how the real situation looked like. Through accepting our history, we express our hope to find some meaning in experience, and in this particular case to never again let our children suffer like children in the Industrial Revolution had to... We hope that we succeeded in our attempt and that through this video you will be able to understand how difficult life for children was, and how unfair they were treated...

Yeah, it is really sad thing :( children are our future and we must take care of them, protect them and give them chance to succeed in their life... Life of those children who lived in the period of the Industrial Revolution was horrible :(

Since when did two wrongs make a right? How far ahead would civilization be if children of that time had been educated and their parents had been paid a livable wage?

Child labour IS cheap labour-how many adults would the factory owner have had to employ if labour laws had been in effect at the time? There's absolutely NO excuse for exploited labour anywhere on earth & but for corrupt politicians in India,China, Bangladesh,Mexico etc it could be eradicated. It's pure logic plain and simple.

Thing to remember is the in pre and Victorian England the idea of "children" in a modern sense didn't exist. Children were seen as small adults hence the seeming barbarity of some people towards them ie. working in mines, mills, sweeping chimneys etc. Also, because there was no welfare state everybody had to either work or starve and you can bet that there would have been queues of people trying to get hired to work in mines and mills. It is always wrong to impose our modern standard on history.

It was Victorian children who built much of our nation. Millions of Chinese ppl were deliberately hooked onto opium, before the opiate wars, which brought massive profits to the Royal Family. Slaves in the West Indies (Carribean) cut down sugar cane for the ruling classes of England. Tea was produced in India under the British Indian Tea Company in factories worked by Indian children. Victorian England had a lot of very rich & educated bloodlines & very poor ppl at the other end of the scales.

Ppl go on about slavery in other nations, but they forget all the English children of poor families forced to work long hours in dangerous conditions, sweeping chimneys, entering coal mines and dangerous areas adult hands couldn't reach, many were malnourished & received very little pay. Charles Kingsleys novel "The Water Babies" is a sad tale of a little English boy who was a chimney sweep who escapes in a fantasy world with little babies in the water, he was appalled by the cruelty of it.

I see you're getting the same socialist nonsense in school the rest of us have been getting. The idea that child labor was something introduced by those wicked, factory-owning capitalists. What does everyone suppose the kiddies were doing before the Industrial Revolution? Going to school? And then after school, lounging around sunning themselves by the pool, right? (Hint: take a look at the image at 2:25. That was their existence before the industrial revolution.)
